Robert; That is another example of lying with statistics. If Apple owns 59% of that market then since that market is 40% of the national market then Apple owns 24% of the National market. Go to your local high school and take a look around, I have. Generic Wintel clones are everywhere, a scattering of Macs, IBMs, COMPAQs etc. When these surveys are done the generic clones which have no brand name do not get entered. Only the names like Apple, IBM, COMPAQ, AST, Zenith etc are even asked about on the survey forms. In addition the generic clones are 30-40% less than the named units and are technically superior as it takes the generic clones about two weeks to get new motherboards etc into production but the named brands are 3-9 moths behind in new stuff due to corporate inertia. Dell is better since all their stuff is single tier clone to end buyer. All the names have very little ISA (industry standard architecture) and are also miles behind in upgradeability, but the generics, just change the CPU or motherboard and you have upgraded. Schools especially like this as they can use a maintenance budget to upgrade instead of capital budgets and stay current. That fee is far too low for a good market. They need to licence motherboard makers at $50-$100 per mother boards and the OS costs extra(with another $100 to Apple in pure profits) I read those articles and they were written by pro Apple people, and it shows. I would not call them accurate, although some bits are correct, however I am reluctant to paste them to SI and do a 'lion item veto', that is to roar about each item. And I am a hunt and peck typer and do not want to take the time to retype them. I say again that pro-Apple puffery is dangerous and leads to complacency, we are winning, now lets coast for a while. Apple is in danger, and we cannot sleep easy and rely on such articles as evidence that all is well. Bill |
