The recent tragedy in Iraq - wedding party, or not, the death of children is always a tragedy - took place in the tiny village of Makreddin, about an hour away from the nearest town of any size, al-Qa'im. You can't see Makreddin on this map, but al-Qa'im is on one of the few significant roads between Iraq and Syrian.

Al-Qa'im is a place of some military significance, it was the site of a phosphate plant where yellow cake was processed in order to purify uranium.

I have no idea where the US military base was from which the attack was launched, but probably not all that nearby. Nothing is nearby.

Today during the daily Pentagon press briefing, the line that was taken was "we had intelligence from reliable sources."
