Doren,

I agree that with a higher center of gravity, SUVs are less stable than sedans. And I didn't write that the SUV was safer. Child car seats are designed to raise a child up so that the lap and shoulder belts fit a child as they would an adult - but this means that lifting a child or infant out of such a seat (and out the door) is much more difficult. A car can claim to hold 5, but no full sized adult is going to fit between two child car seats (stick a typical stroller in the trunk, and you don't have to worry about very many grocery bags).

Why does a contractor have to have a crew cab or SUV? What's wrong with a corolla with a trailer hitch? Not macho enough? The other contractors will make fun? A corolla with a small trailer would be just as secure for expensive tools as the cab of a SUV, and you can carry just as many bricks or kettles tar (why do expensive tools deserve to be stored in the cab of a SUV and not children?).

re: "Well that's ironic as SUVs are known to be less safe than passenger vehicles in general because of the higher center of gravity.

The argument about the contractor is spurious as anyone who's ever built buildings could tell you. A palette of bricks or 15 100lb kegs of tar are seriously different than a bunch of grocery bags. You are just making excuses here for being lazy."
