Was there something more going on when Bill Bennett's gambling problem came to light? Some thought so. IMO, it was about him having set himself up as a paragon. The Book of Virtues, for heaven's sake.

Likewise, we set ourselves up as a paragon when we entered Iraq. Paragons are big fat targets. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, as the saying goes, and the more glee that is taken by those over whom they lorded their virtue.

There may be some other things going on in both cases to complicate things, but they're just peripheral, IMO. The fallen paragon has through the ages been the theme of great tragedies. We can't get away from that.
