Where was the Western media's moral outrage when King Hussein did to the Palestinians things that the Israelis don't even contemplate?

Where was the Western media's moral outrage when Assad flattened a city in a fit of pique, killing thousands of innocent civilians?... Where was the Western media's moral outrage when Saddam gassed Kurds and Iranians?... Where is the Western media's moral outrage when the Saudis decapitate and mutilate their own?...Where is the Western media's moral outrage over what is taking place in the Sudan?

Where was almost any govt's outrage over these things?

As Peter Galbraith wrote in his recent article in the NYRB, the Reagan admin not only expressed no outrage over Saddam gassing Kurds, they studiously tried to ignore it.

That isn't to "excuse" the media, they have an important role to play and ought to play it. But govts have a responsibility too. Focusing on the media without including culpability of govts is wrong.

But, personally, I agree with Steven's larger point. We like to clothe ourselves in a standard of virtue. And frequently do or support actions that are remote from that standard, actions that are claimed to be virtuous but are actually done to promote American business interests and have little to do with what we overtly claim. This will inevitably antagonize both the parties to whom the actions are done and third party onlookers.
