"It is precisely because they dream of a free and autonomous state that the Iraqis want Americans to leave."

Of course. And any sensitive person should appreciate that.

" We are not helping."

I disagree. We have unfinished business that needs resolution before we head out. The country is not secure and autonomous and it (IMO) is at a minimum our responsibility to hang in until the country is secure enough to maintain its own stability.

To borrow from your earlier analogy regarding parents and teens. Teens want adults to just drop dead and leave them alone... we don't, because our responsibility of parenting is not quite complete until the child is able to handle the world as a fully functioning adult unit.

"Fighting for peace is like f**king for virginity."

It depends on your definition of peace. If you mean a life in which everyone is prohibited from fighting on an equal basis...try prison. If you mean existence without conflict and struggle ... crawl into your grave. If you mean a sense of well being in which you have liberty and live in just circumstances, you have to take a stand on the issue. People will want to fight you for it and the only way to give them what they want without fighting for it, is to sacrifice liberty and justice. You have peace when you know you are living a decent life. To me that is living up to my responsibilities, including standing up for liberty and justice when and where I am called upon. My peace comes with a struggle against injustice and in being tested by distractions from decency, and in knowing that I can rise to each occassion. If yours lies on top of a lotus flower in the himalayas ... go find it.
