But that institution is way too disfunctional, even corrupt, to be a model for anything more than good intentions and wishful thinking.

The reality isn't the point. The UN is held up as THE international moral actor. The UN isn't just a debating club to the faithful, it is a "moralizer". Otherwise spurned efforts are baptised into righteousness with the donning of the Blue Helm.

It isn't because the UN is the only game in town. It isn't. It isn't because it is multilateral. So is the 40 nation Coalition, that doesn't count for much to critics. But drape that self-same Coalition in blue, and suddenly it gains "legitimacy". It is moralized. It suddenly has moral weight, and is a force for good.

So it goes.
