Iraq may be Bush's end May 20, 2004 For the first time, Bush must face the real possibility that he will leave office soon - as a failure, writes Gregory Hywood. In his new book, Plan of Attack, the famous American journalist Bob Woodward relates how on August 5, 2002, US Secretary of State Colin Powell advised George Bush that if he invaded Iraq the war would dominate his presidency. Woodward writes that Powell told the President: "You are going to be the proud owner of 25 million people. You will own all their hopes, aspirations and problems. You'll own it all. "It's going to suck the oxygen out of everything," Powell continued. And so as not to sidestep the politics of it, he added: "This will become the first term." The clear implication was: did the President want to be defined this way? Did he want to run for re-election on an Iraq war? Later, in an interview for the book, Woodward asked Bush about that conversation with Powell. Bush's reply was mostly about the issues of freedom and security, but he conceded that his Secretary of State was talking of the practical difficulties associated with Iraqi reconstruction. <more> theage.com.au
