The photos we've seen, we've seen, and testimony has been given by American soldiers, Swedes, Iraqi journalists working for Reuters, the ICRC, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International. Many accounts by separate people of identical torture practices are on record and have been for a long time. Most of it was ignored, and still would be ignored if it weren't for the photos, as you know.
You know, I think I'm almost as upset about the attitudes toward torture I'm witnessing on SI as I am by the accounts themselves. I feel as though there's a nest of people here who don't understand how extraordinary this country is and the ways in which it is unique. They seem to think America is real estate and a flag. The concept of "human rights" is foreign to them. They could live in Iran and be satisfied with the setup if the standard of living were okay, is what I feel as though I'm witnessing.
I've over-generalized, I acknowledge.
I'm sure exaggeration will take place. But the baseline is the photos, and videos, and confessions, and bodies. Since those won't go away, I'm wondering how greatly the picture is going to improve.
