Chinese coke producers against lifting curbs on exports

Beijing, May 23. (PTI): Despite growing international pressure on China to lift its export curbs on coke, a key ingredient in making steel, domestic coke producers have appealed to the Chinese Government not to succumb citing a possible "catastrophe," the state media reported today.

Dozens of delegates from both producers and exporters of coke insisted that the Chinese Government should not suddenly terminate the long-term restriction measure on coke export, otherwise, the coke industry will encounter "catastrophe" and a new trade conflict will easily occur.

They argued that cancelling the limit on coke export at once can easily lead to domestic production in chaos and put the competition out of order, jointly resulting in higher pressure on China's environment protection.

The delegates suggested that the Government should keep stable coke export quantity under the ongoing quota administration system, which can not only help maintain a balance between the domestic and overseas markets, but also maintain a sound order for its whole foreign trade.

Their appeal came amid the European Union's (EU) threat to bring its first World Trade Organisation (WTO) complaint ever against China if the export curbs on coke stay in place.

Why the developed countries cannot produce their own coke? Coke production pollute the environment thousands of time worse than cars. Too much coke production is extremely harmful for China environment as well as Chinese people's health!
