Artificial reefs to be built in south China

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sea and fishery authority in south China's Guangdong province has recently approved an application from Shenzhen city to build man-made reefs in the sea as a method to further protect the environment.

The reefs, usually made up of reinforced concrete and steel plates, will be placed in the bottom of certain sea areas and probably become the habitat of seashells, microbes and fishes, according to a report delivered by the Shenzhen fishery department.

The report indicates that as much as 80 million yuan (US$9.6 million) will be invested in five years to construct approximately 16 sq km of man-made reef areas in three off-shore zones near Shenzhen. After completion, the reefs will probably increase the local sea resources and promote the sightseeing industry.

The local fishery department kicked off trial construction in a 1 sq km area last year and drew helpful experiences from large scale operation. The local authority will also put in fries and algae in the zones and strictly control fishery exploitation there, said the report.

Over-fishing and tourism have seriously affected the environment in some off-shore areas in the nation and relevant government administrations were urged to take effective measures to restore the natural ecological balance there.
