That, I must admit, Andrew is a new one for me. I've run into all sorts of ways of expressing disagreement and/or agreement on the this forum (and others on SI) and I've seen fairly religious folk, or at least folk who so professed to be, but someone praying directly, well, that's definitely new.
The problem, I find, is not admitting what you've called "bias" which tends to connote an activity, it's more like "perspective." We all have them which is the accumulation of social location and socialization and experience, but it's a bit much to claim the "every influence that has impinged on us in or sojourn . . . " is the source.
However, knowing we are all working within perspectives, seems to me to be the beginning of things, not the end of things. Trying to see things from the other's point of view, trying to see other worlds from within the frameworks of those occupants, trying to empathize, strikes me as the next step.
And, the last step, so long as we are into sequencing, is to discuss, argue, debate, talk, in order to persuade others and, if possible, to find common ground.
This little corner of the internet does a great deal of arguing and debating but precious little searching for common ground. It's simply fun to kid one another. Nothing more serious than that, at least so far as I'm concerned. |
