Arabs rule out joining US in Iraq

From correspondents in Tunis
May 24, 2004

ARAB countries would refrain from sending troops to Iraq as long as US-led coalition forces occupied the country, Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa said in Tunis today.

"Sending Arab forces to Iraq is tied to certain conditions - first of all the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq," he said.

Gen Mussa was speaking at a joint press conference with Tunisian Foreign Minister Habib Ben Yahia following an Arab summit.

"This subject was not debated at the Arab summit," he said.

Gen Mussa noted there was no UN Security Council resolution for setting up an international force in Iraq under United Nations command.

"The occupation forces are still there and the Arabs will not in any way become part of an occupation force of an Arab country."

In the final declaration of the summit, Arab leaders stressed the central role the United Nations must play in paving the way for the transfer of power back to Iraqis as scheduled on June 30.

They urged the security council to take the necessary steps to end the occupation and allow the withdrawal of coalition troops from Iraq and help Iraqis recover complete sovereignty over the country.
