A very thoughtful post, JohnM. And I do appreciate reading and reflecting on it.

I find that I am in almost total agreement with your positions. However, I do not like to argue, debate and otherwise contend with another re: his or her beliefs and convictions. I respect those convictions even when I do not agree with them. I learned a long time ago that it is almost impossible to argue, debate, talk in order to persuade others. One might "persuade" through effective example but hardly ever through argumentation, discussion and debate. Arguments usually serve only to harden opposing factions in their respective positions, ultimately ending only when one or the other tires of the contest and walks away. And usually one walks away from an argument with his convictions still intact and unchanged. Yes, the argument may have caused a momentary excitement and/or disturbance but that soon passes as one moves from the confrontation back to his or her firmly held convictions.

I prefer to listen to others whom I respect and, rather than argue my position, merely express it in the form of the written reply. I tend to think more clearly when writing than in speaking. And in my opinion, what is sadly lacking in most arguments is clarity of thought.

But thanks again for yours.
