It could be even more than the numbers show, since "moderate" is a purely self-defined term.

It also could be less.

Consider it from the POV of what we choose to call ourselves. Why would anyone who lives and works in the world of national journalists choose to call himself a "conservative"? Even in the blue general public, who would choose that label for himself? I submit that not many would but would instead call themselves "moderates."

You might call yourself "conservative" if you moved into that environment from someplace where conservative was cool and you were used to that label and comfortable with it. You would also choose it if you strongly identified with a conservative church. Or if you were a business executive and/or member of a country club. Or you might choose it if you wanted to make a statement and differentiate yourself. Otherwise, you would call yourself "moderate" if offered a scale that only offered you liberal/moderate/conservative.

broad conclusions about the political findings should be tempered by analyzing some of the details in the findings. For example, they identify strong "libertarian" leanings among jouurnalists, including doubts about the role of "big government."

I suspect that most of those folks are libertarian like me. Libertarian conservatives in a blue environment are unlikely to call themselves "conservative." They will choose "moderate" instead, IMO, rather than risk being associated with the negative stereotype of a social conservative. LB is fond of the "eagle" label. If "eagle" is not offered as a choice, what do you pick? LB chooses "conservative" but I'd bet that most would pick "moderate."
