Economic equality is one of the many purported fruitful upshots of democracy but is not part of the basic definition, as for as I know, of democracy.
Is it not what Communism aims to provide at the expense of freedom (political) of expression?
In practice neither of them alone is possible in a pluralistic society, but a judicious mixture of both is what is aimed for.
