China goes global in farming efforts

Beijing - China has started leasing farmland abroad as a new way of feeding one fifth of the world's population on seven percent of the planet's arable land, state media reported Monday.

Southwestern Chongqing municipality recently signed an agreement with the Lao government to establish a zone in the Southeast Asian country for Chinese agricultural enterprises, Xinhua news agency said.

The 5 000-hectare facility will enable Chinese entrepreneurs to engage in not just grain production, but also aquaculture and food processing.

The project is not the first of its kind in China, according to the news agency.

As early as 1996, the Suntime International Techno-Economic Cooperation (Group), from northwestern Xinjiang region, invested $50 000 in Cuba in developing an area of 150 hectares to grow rice.

The experiment was deemed a success, and two years later, the company invested $3.2 million to purchase 1 050 hectares of farmland from the Mexican government.

Since 1998, China's grain production has dropped by 15.7 percent to reach a low of 431 million tonnes last year as many farmers have found it unprofitable to till the land, according to official Chinese statistics. - AFP
