No, reality sucks sometimes. The reality is that the U.S. is one of the worst human rights abusers in the world. Ask anyone from Viet Nam, El Salvador, Iraq, etc. Does My Lai ring a bell? The U.S. hasn't respected human rights and the prison photos scandal is a sympton of our long standing policy that makes human rights a low priority. How about the turkey shoot on the highway from Kuwait City to Basara in the first Gulf War? What was moral about that war crime and clear violation of human rights? Human rights takes a back seat to moneyed interest every time. From time to time Americans realize this when things like My Lai occur, the turkey shoot on the "Highway of Death" after the first Gulf War, and the prisoner abuse scandal during this current war. Hell, look at how we treat our own prisoners and mentally ill. The U.S. is one of the top executioners in the world, up there with countries like Iran, Russia, China, and Sudan. Our mentally ill don't get proper treatment either, many are in prisons when they should be in hospitals. Stop looking at things through rosed colored glasses, the U.S. has a horrible human rights record, and most of the world realizes this sad fact, which is why they dislike us so much and call us the Ugly American. Most Americans are too ignorant or naive to realize our ongoing abysmal human rights record.
