Hey, that's a pretty good story. Doesn't surprise me all that much that a Mourning Dove would do that though as I think they can be quite tame. I think that birds that hang around stores, universities, etc.. can become quite comfortable about scavenging for food in unusual ways. Typical example would be starlings and grackles that I've seen "dumpster diving" through the little door flapper on the trash cans in parking lots of fast food joints. Sometimes they get trapped inside and give people a bit of a scare when they come blasting out when somebody comes along and pushes some trash through the door.

Last week I saw 2 starlings go inside of a small electric switch box for a set of traffic lights when I was in the city. Kinda scary. You would think they might get zapped doing something like that.

One thing I've had happen here at the farm a couple of times in the past is birds -- usually starlings -- going down the stove pipes and ending up inside the woodstove that is down in the basement. I would go down to do some laundry and hear scratching sounds coming from the sloping pipe coming from the wall to the stove, and then the handle on the side of the stove that controls the down-draft baffle would start swinging back and forth like there was a ghost in the room. Both times, I opened the door and found a very soot-covered bird sitting on the baffle. Crazy birds going down the stove pipes in the first place!
