The only reason the U.S. maintains such an enourmous military, we spend something like 10 times more than anyone else on the military, is to protect our economic intersts around the world, especially oil. It's all about economic hemogeny, not military security or sound policy, it's economically driven. Perhaps an argument can be made that it's worth it, but the only ones who benefit from these militaristic policies are oil barrons and military weapons producers, both of whom are reaping tremendous profits under current U.S. policies. It's certainly worth it for them. The average American would be better off if we just kicked our oil habit for good and spent the money that we spend on the bloated military on something useful like transportation or schools.
