The Seven Factors

These key "failure factors" are:

1) Restrictions on the free flow of information.

2) The subjugation of women.

3) Inability to accept responsibility for individual or collective failure.

4) The extended family or clan as the basic unit of social organization.

5) Domination by a restrictive religion.

6) A low valuation of education.

7) Low prestige assigned to work.

8) Zero-Sum Knowledge

Brazil losing score:
1) Portuguese language is a barrier. Most of the knowledge is published in English. Brazil scores 100%.

2) Brazil scores 30% in this respect

3) Accept responsibility? No! The guilty parts are 10.000Km away. Brazil scores 100%.

4) The Latin family with the mama at the center. Family enterprises instead of shareholding. 30 year old siblings living in the parents' home. Brazil scores 50%.

5) Zero, no such restriction in Brazil.

6) Educate the citizen is not a priority. Diploma seen as a passport to the elite. Education funds controlled by a university caste. Scores 100%.

7) Earn a living by one's own effort? Uneducated like Elmat? No good. There's no glamour in earning one's living by one's own effort! Scores 100%

8) Zero-Sum Knowledge. Eplay, we call them 'gaveteiros', Gaveta is a drawer. People take information or knowledge as their own property and they are the guardians of it and keep it inside a drawer. Everything has to imparted only between a few friends. Brazil scores 100% on this one.

One example here in Indonesia: go to any hotel lobby after 6:30PM. There is always a gathering of people drinking tea and discussing deals. Why not in the office? Because only a few friends and insiders are to be part of it. Everything is a backroom deal. Nothing works by phone, email or fax. Only by seating around a table.!
