I wouldn't say terrible- but the world is, imo, more dangerous since the breakup of the communist leadership in the former USSR. Thought it was repressive, it was a known quantity- and it was efficient at keeping malcontents focused on itself- and it dealt rather efficiently with them (more efficiently than we could, with our constraints regarding humanitarian treatment and action). One can say exactly the same thing about Iraq. So freedom elsewhere is not, imo, necessarily good for the US. But it's very noble of the US to pursue such high minded ideals, at such great cost, that will bring us large amounts of grief.
