UPDATE - Marvel inks DVD deal with Lion's Gate
Tuesday May 25, 7:29 am ET

NEW YORK, May 25 (Reuters) - Comic book publisher Marvel Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:MVL - News) on Tuesday said it would develop eight animated DVDs based on its characters with film studio Lion's Gate Entertainment (Toronto:LGF.TO - News).

The deal represents a deeper move into Marvel's growing business of licensing its characters, which has yielded such film hits as "Spider-Man" and "X-Men."

For independent studio Lion's Gate, the deal expands a distribution agreement that includes future films based on Marvel characters "Iron Fist" and "Black Widow."

The films will go straight to the home DVD market without a theatrical release, with the first film to be released in late 2005. The companies said the characters on which the films will be based will be announced at a later date.

Under the terms of the deal, Lion's Gate will pay Marvel licensing fees and fund the production, distribution and marketing of each film. Both companies will share in the profits from the deal.
