Kerry Struggles to Mark Clear Differences with Bush over Iraq

Kerry's inability to clarify his policies comes home to roost again.

Excerpt: WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry (news - web sites) has struggled to offer a clear alternative to President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s policies on Iraq (news - web sites), leaving the two men running even in polls despite a huge slump in Bush's popularity, analysts said.

Polls show Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, is gaining little from the fall in Bush's popularity or from the increased questioning over Bush's handling of the Iraq war.

"Obviously the last month has been a difficult one for Bush," said Eric Davis, a political scientist from Middlebury College in Vermont. "But Kerry doesn't seem to have capitalized on it at all."
