PEACE BRAKING OUT AS Musharraf invites Sonia to Islamabad for talks

* Indo-Pak FMs also discuss composite dialogue process and bilateral relations

ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday phoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi to congratulate her on her party’s coming to power. He also invited her to Islamabad for talks, our correspondent reported.

Sources said that President Musharraf called Ms Gandhi in the evening. It was the first ever telephone conversation between them and lasted for 10 minutes. “The two leaders exchanged good wishes and stressed the need to continue the on-going peace process between the two countries,” sources told Daily Times. President Musharraf had also called Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to greet him on his election as the prime minister of India.

AFP adds: Musharraf requested her support for peace talks between the two countries, India’s foreign ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said.

Gandhi thanked President Musharraf and said her party had always backed the peace initiative with Pakistan.
