There is strong opposition to not only the mining but also the burning of coal which gives rise to higher levels of carbon dioxide than hydrocarbons which derive a proportion of their energy from the conversion of hydrogen to water. Coal will be and is strongly opposed by global warming advocates. Of the carbon based energy sources, natural gas is the least offensive since it has the highest proportion of hydrogen of any of those sources. On the other hand methane itself is a powerful greenhouse gas.
