Wednesday May 26, 2004--The Rasmussen Consumer Index fell to its lowest level in six months on Wednesday, dropping another two points to 104.7. The Consumer Index, which measures the economic confidence of American consumers on a daily basis, is down one from a week ago, down eleven from a month ago and down five from three months ago.

The Rasmussen Investor Index fell four points on Wednesday to 128.7. It is up four from a week ago, down six from a month ago and up two from three months ago.

Yesterday, the Conference Board released a report showing Consumer Confidence held steady in May. Conference Board data is collected via U.S. mail. As a result, their report includes responses from questionnaires that were completed during the first half of May.

During that same time frame, the Rasmussen Consumer Index also found economic confidence in the same range as the previous month. However, confidence has fallen since the Conference Board data collection period ended. Daily readings during the first half of May were generally five to ten points above current levels.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of Americans believe that the economy is getting worse. Over the past year, this level has been reached on just two other days (October 1, 2003 and August 24, 2003). Just 30% believe the economy is getting better.
