The point to me is that we widened the war on Al Qaeda with our actions in Iraq, and have worsened an already bad situation

We opened an Iraqi front on the war on Al Qaeda. Whether we "widened" the war depends on what Al Qaeda would be doing if we had not gone into Iraq. It wasn't their plan to sit quiet and do nothing, you know. It is quite possible that they did not manage other 9/11's because they were distracted.
