You stop empowering organized crime and quickly put to an end the imprisonment of thousands and upon thousands of nonviolent inmates. Hundreds of billions of dollars would all of a sudden become taxable. It would be the same as when prohibition was ended. People wanted the booze and there was no way around it. Same with recreational drugs, people want em, they'll get em, no matter what you do.
Drug prohibition, as well, corrupts legitimate institutions like the police and courts.
