SBUX became an icon for the upwardly mobile - long after the truly mobile moved on to other badges of membership. Rather like a gaudy brand tag emblazoned on the outside of a garment. The price of an inflated cup of caffeine is a small price for the security of membership in an illusion. Especially in hard times? There are finite populations of Yups to push SBUX's bottom line - the geometric growth was generated from the vast unwashed... Joe and Jane sixpack mutated to Joe and Jane latte? As always, it's an amusing world.
