Wrong war. The M16 replaced the M14 during the early years of Vietnam. In WWII the battle rifle was an M1 Garand which shot the 7.62 round called the .30-06. The .30 stands for the caliber and the 06 stands for the year it replaced the .30-40 Krag, the .30 being the caliber and the 40 standing for the grains of powder used.

When the army switched from the bolt action 03A3 Springfield rifles to the Garand it sold off the 03A3 rifles and because the actions were so good they became a very popular rifle to buy and be restocked and made into hunting rifles.
