SANTA CLARA, Calif.--ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands remained the leader in terms of market share in the lithography business in 2003, but Canon Inc. made the most gains in the arena, according to VSLI Research Inc. on Thursday (May 27).
In total, the lithography business hit $5.7 billion in sales last year, up 10 percent from $5.18 billion in 2002, according to VLSI Research, a market research firm in Santa Clara.
In terms of market share, ASML was the leader for the second consecutive year. But the company's market share fell from 30 percent in 2002, to 25 percent in 2003, according to the report.
After two years of declining sales, number two supplier Nikon Corp. of Japan rebounded with a 26 percent sales increase in 2003. Nikon's market share was 20 percent in 2003, which was the same as 2002, according to the report.
Due largely to the increased demand of LCD, Canon Inc.'s lithography sales increased by more than 43 percent from 2002. Canon's share jumped from 15 percent in 2002, to 20 percent in 2003. This increase narrowed the margin between the second and third position to just over $100 million. |
