I guess individual conscience doesn't always take precedence, after all..

Nadine, reread my posts and see if you can discern the distinction. Individual conscience always takes precedence for the INDIVIDUAL that acts. His actions in pursuit of his conscience may excuse him from a moral point of view in my eyes, but they do not exempt him from paying a price for breaking the law.

I've many times done what I honestly considered the "right thing" and then paid the price because my actions were prohibited by some rule. I never complained about the penalty; it was inherently part of the process.

We should all admire a person that follows his conscience while, at the SAME TIME, being prepared to judge his actions as misguided and requiring punishment. Or, as you say; I'd regard him as a misguided follower of a deeply misogynistic and backwards system. I'd throw the book at him to send the clear message that we don't allow this crap in America.

In a day and age when too few of us seem to have the strength of character to stand against the crowd and do what we feel is right, however, I'd deeply regret the death or long term imprisonment of a man who had the courage of his convictions, no matter that his convictions were too dangerous for society to tolerate.
