Wow, you folks have had fun today batting the high dudgeon back and forth.

I didn't intend that the single word I put in quote marks was to be understood as a quotation from you. I apologize for the confusion. And I apologize also for getting a laugh or two from the posturing of you and your chums.

I thought that quotation marks on a single word are a way of using the word ironically which was my intention. And in fact, it is okay to use quotation marks for that purpose:

Use quotation marks to indicate words used ironically, with reservations, or in some unusual way.

The great march of "progress" has left millions impoverished and hungry.

Now to this "straw man" business. The "straw man" is a falsity used sometimes in debates. But the "straw man charge" can also be falselly invoked to avoid debate. It's a cute little game. If you're not too good at defending your ideas and viewpoints, then when something you've posted is challenged or questioned, you've got a great out. You just invoke the "straw man charge" and you can say, that's not my opinion, you're creating a straw man fallacy. And then end the conversation without having to do anything tough like clarifying or defending whatever it is you believe.
