International Security

The Stanford Institute for International Studies (SIIS) offers a three-course certificate program in International Security for scientists, engineers and other security professionals at national labs and corporations seeking a background in treaties and policy as context for their work.

The program, designed for Non Degree Option (NDO) students, requires the completion of three courses with a letter grade indicator average of 3.0 or better to qualify for the certificate. The three courses, taught by Stanford faculty with guest lecturers, are offered in successive academic quarters beginning with the Autumn quarter:

MS&E 293, Technology in National Security
PoliSci 114S, International Security in a Changing World
PoliSci 114T, * Major Issues in International Conflict Management

* PoliSci 114T will be postponed until Spring 2005. Professor Stedman will be serving as research director for the United Nations'' High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges, and Change, by appointment of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, during Spring 2004. Professor Stedman is expected to resume teaching PoliSci 114T in Spring 2005. For Spring 2004, PoliSci 110B is being offered as an alternative to PoliSci 114T. Students may complete the International Security certificate with either PoliSci 110B in 2004 or PoliSci 114T in 2005.
