Friday May 28th, 2004

By Will Gray

Kimi Raikkonen topped the times for McLaren-Mercedes in second practice for the European Grand Prix on Friday as World Champion Michael Schumacher finished ninth after completing just nine laps in his Ferrari.

Finn Raikkonen set a time of 1:29.355 to finish 0.263 seconds faster than second-placed Briton Jenson Button with German Ralf Schumacher third and Scot David Coulthard, in the second McLaren, in fourth.

Italian Jarno Trulli, who won the last race in Monaco, finished fifth for Renault, with Brazilian Rubens Barrichello the leading Bridgestone runner in sixth in the lead Ferrari.

BAR-Honda test driver Anthony Davidson, who had topped the times in the first session, finished seventh with Spaniard Fernando Alonso eighth for Renault and Takuma Sato, in the third BAR, completing the top ten.

Sauber's difficult weekend continued when Brazilian Felipe Massa stopped out on the circuit. The team had been forced to change Italian Giancarlo Fisichella's engine after he had stopped in the first session.
