Workshop on Embedded Systems

The EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) is offering the Year 2000 Embedded Systems workshop described below:

The Year 2000 anomaly is not "problem in search of a solution," but thousands of unique potential problems demanding objective, thorough analysis. Developing guidelines for problem analysis is a primary goal of EPRI's Year 2000 Embedded Systems Workshop. Not only embedded systems will be affected but also: Process Controls - DCS, PLC, PC's, Field instruments, recorders, sensors, and Control systems.

EPRI's Role

EPRI is the logical center for group-sponsored inquiry and research on the Year 2000 Embedded Systems issue.

Industry Need

The Year 2000 issue is one that could adversely impact the process industry at varying levels. Nuisance problems ranging from the loss of operator consoles to invalid time-tagging of data could result in operator errors. And as the relationship between plant computers and control systems becomes stronger as the industry continues to evolve into the information management world the impact of the problem could be plant-wide. Additionally, microprocessors are being used in devices other than controllers such as smart field devices (e.g., transmitters, valves, relays, remote terminal units). However, the Year 2000 issue has not been adequately addressed in the areas of control system integration, test checkout, and field testing.

Workshop Objectives

Determine the scope of the issue with utilities and vendors already involved with the problem. Provide a status of current efforts to address the problem. Develop a coordinated plan of attack including establishment of a "living" industry website for affected systems. Hold interactive panel sessions to provide input for EPRI guidelines. Determine the possibility of conducting an actual field test to identify the true scope of the problem.
