Think this through with me. Microsoft understands how big 64 bit will be for the whole industry and especially microsoft. Intel is turning to, like a large aircraft carrier. AMD is more like a ChrisCraft. :))

Ask yourself, what advantage does "Big Iron" really have? Answer: 64 Bitness.

This transition is going to happen very fast. My guess is 6 months to a year.

Of course, I realize that is not fast enough for you. :))

The "tell" is that article I posted on databases and how ms is growing and how IBM by pumping Linux is really competing with its own DB2 by in effect providing a new "front end" which may also use new back ends other than IBM's own database AND which disrupts their own service income stream. And if you think about it, Databases are a metaphor or the foundation of EVERY computer application.

Nobody is in a better position to benefit than MS.

The only real threat to Microsoft's Total World Domination is Sun. They have the expertise and the vision to provide the tools to make the transition. But, alas, Sun will fail. They will never be able to abandon their hardware orientaion; just like Apple could not.

You can think of IBM as today's Intergalactic Digital Research. :))
