<<<certain drugs are too profitable to be made legal>>>

I ran across this article last night, which mentions a tie in with the insider trading and Afghanistan heroine. It's kind of interesting how much stuff the US media reports, but never analyzes. At a certain point I wonder if what I've seen referred to as "limited hangouts" is actually real journalists slipping otherwise prohibited information out the only way they're allowed. Since their handlers won't let them do real investigative journalism, or publish the results, their only option is to sneak dry pieces of critical information out in the form of trivia.

As I see it, the evidence points to the heroine trade being a major reason for the invasion of Afghanistan, if not "the" major reason. Some estimates I've seen, although I don't know how reliable those estimates are, quote Afghanistan opium being worth $200 billion a year to the heroine trade. With the US being the world's top producer of the catalyst used to turn opium into heroine, the pipeline almost amounts to icing on the cake.
