CBC WATCH

Speaking of Copps ... Every Friday for the next four weeks, the left-leaning CBC radio program The Current will have a prominent politician as the guest host. Today, representing the separatists, the host is Daniel Turp, an urbane Parti Quebecois MNA. Bloc members are delighted. Next Friday, Preston Manning, the creator of Reform, will host for the Conservatives; they, too, are delighted. The choice of Bob Rae, the former Ontario premier, to front the show on June 18 no doubt thrills NDPers.

But, come June 11, guess who will host for the Grits? None other than Sheila Copps, a huge CBC booster, who was dumped from the Cabinet by Mr. Martin after seeking the leadership. It goes without saying that Martin strategists are apoplectic at what they perceive to be CBC bias against them, since Ms. Copps has had nothing nice to say about Mr. Martin. Their main gripe is that she speaks for barely 8% of the party, according to the leadership ballot. Senator David Smith, the Chretienite who now campaigns for Mr. Martin, or Stephen LeDrew, the former Liberal president, would have been much more representative of the broad sentiment of the party. But who said the CBC wants to be fair and balanced?
