McCain may team up with Kerry. There's a chance. Remember they see eye to eye on most issues and trust each other deeply. Kerry has a very strong relationship with McCain which he does not have with Edwards or any of the others.

Also, McCain is a patriot and this teaming with Kerry would really unify the country. It would effectively end the neocon coup d'etat on American democracy by the extreme rightwing fat cats, polluters and anti womens rights Baptists. That unholy alliance is a minority who have somehow taken over the country. McCain dislikes them as much as Kerry does.

That said, Kerry does not need McCain to beat Bush.
