I'm wondering how long it will be before Sistani turns out to be another one of those bad guys with whom we eventually regret collaborating... Probably a good chance, who knows. But we really don't have much choice in this one. I think he wants an Islamic sharia state, without clerical rule. Where he's made his mistakes have all been in being hasty about getting elections sooner than later, and without any constraints on a potential Shiite majoritarian government that would result. We'll see how "quietist" this guy really is in January 2005 or so, when election time rolls around... Derek
