In the 19th century, environmentalism didn't exist as a concept. Yes, terrible things were done way back then but in those days people assumed natural resources were infinite. In fact that was the feeling all the way up to the 1950's. But Bush-Cheney know damn well what environmentalism is and they deliberately fight against it. Cheney is probably the most powerful lobbyist/leader for the polluters in the world. That's not a wild statement, that's just true if you know the details.
