I don't have to go to a Brazilian slum to know that Brazil has a lopsided wealth distribution. The CIA site has Brazil's Gini income distribution index at 60, one of the highest in the world. The USA Gini is 40, one of the highest among the industrialized countries -- so we are not doing that great either, if you don't like huge income inequalities.

Yes, lots of suffering among the abandoned children in Brazil. That does not change the fact that in the last few years there has been a dramatic reduction in Brazilian fertility to a bit below long term replacement rate. Given that its democracy is well established and its economy is growing rapidly, I think its prospects are pretty good.
