Nope. Mid-eastern studies departments have only recently began linking Afghanistan to the mid east because of recent Talibanic affinity with that region and the geopolitical landscape that has emerged because of it. Culturally, Afghanistan's traditions are remote from the Mid-east. Afghanistan is part of southern/central Asia. If Afghanistan is part of the mid-east, then so are Pakistan and Turkmenistan.
