One problem with the Catholics - and I am a Catholic so it's not prejudiced to say this - is that the Pope doesn't really believe in the separation of church and state. There are similar problems with Islamism - that's motivated by a desire for an Islamic state run according to shariah law, and the birds we have here in the US who want to put references to God everywhere, like monuments to the Ten Commandments in government office buildings.

In other words, it's not religion that's the problem, nor even religious freedom, but wanting to run everybody else's life according to your religion.

There are probably plenty of Muslims in France that would rather not have to please the local Imam, but you know what peer pressure is like. If forced to choose between fitting into your community or going it alone, most knuckle under. And, as you say, with enough of your own kind to achieve critical mass, you don't have to assimilate.
