WASHINGTON, May 30 (UPI) -- President Bush was on a White House driveway Sunday to greet bikers who represented thousands in Washington for the 17th annual Rolling Thunder ride.

Bush shook hands with Rolling Thunder President Artie Muller and his companion, singer Nancy Sinatra, and several others, then gave them a tour of the Oval Office.

Later Bush, in a telephone hookup, spoke to thousands of bikers assembled in Washington's RFK Stadium, saying he wanted to thank the bikers for "honoring

the men and women of our military who fight today in Afghanistan and in

Iraq," United Press International reported.

Bush said he is "proud to be the commander-in-chief of these brave Americans." He said he will "always honor their service. I will do everything in my power to ensure that they and their families receive the gratitude and respect of our great nation."

The thunder of thousands of motorcycles began as a tribute to those who served in Vietnam and in its beginnings was not as universally welcomed as it came to be in the nation's capital, with many capital streets now closed to autos to accommodate the bikes.
