There is no contradiction between freedom and conscription.

There's a big contradiction - conscription is a form of slavery, which is the opposite of freedom.

In fact sharing the sacrifice of military service will encourage the debate of whether a war is justified, and may stop some wars from taking place.

I think the empirical evidence is on the other side, i.e. drafts enable war. The sacrifice isn't shared, either; drafts generally target a narrow slice of the population (e.g. young men).

I am much more worried about a group like the current admin hijacking the military for their own purpose, and the rest of the country not having an incentive to stop them early on.

That's a problem, but I think a bigger problem is informational. War propaganda is powerful stuff, and not many people can resist it.
