I realize that the U.S. and Isreal are close allies and any government that the U.S. installs in Iraq will probably have to meet the approval of the Isrealies. But, I think the cold hard cash from oil trumps any concerns with keeping Isreal happy. Money talks, BS walks. The U.S. and Isreal have certainly had their differences over the years, with the U.S. jailing Mossad agents for spying. Also, we haven't always agreed on the Palestinian issue. Obviously, the government that the U.S. installs in Iraq will follow our orders, one of which will be non-agression towards Isreal.

It does appear that it might have in fact been Iran who duped the U.S. into attacking Iraq, with phony WMD intelligence fed to the Bush Admin through Chablias. Getting rid of Saddam was just as important to Iran as it was to Isreal, probably more so, since Iran shares a large border with Iraq and fought a bloody 8 year war. A world without Saddam is a much more secure world for Iran. They better hope that they're not next in the U.S.'s campaign to remake the Middle East. One of the reasons Iran is helping Iraq's rebels is because they obviously have a vested interest in ensuring that the transition in Iraq isn't too smooth for the Americans. If the U.S. finds it too easy, they might consider attacking Iran next. But, a quagmire hurts public support for war, and keeps Iran safer from a U.S. attack.
