Conservative success in talk radio is based on a massive desire for news / current events analysis that is an alternative to the mainstream liberal media.

You miss the point. The MAINSTREAM media that you call liberal is representing the majority. That means the conservative talk radio is the minority in the country and their anger at being in the minority (which will probably always be the case) is the fuel of their programming. They have an audience of course, every minority audience is worth something so there is no reason they can't make money. But in the case of air america, there will be no anger after Bush is out.
